The Piano Guys Live at Red Butte Garden - Beethoven's 5 Secrets (Cello/Orchestral Cover)
Story behind the song: The American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic (Youth Orchestra) and its director, Kayson Brown, approached us with this idea. We loved it. It combined two of the things we are working to accomplish -- inviting people to classical music and inspiring young musicians. Steven Sharp Nelson had soloed with the orchestra the previous year and loved the spirit and the talent that the orchestra showed at such young ages (ages 13-18!) Together we developed the concept of "Beethoven's 5 Secrets," combining OneRepublic's tune "Secrets" with melodies and moments from all four movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. We used 5 different melodies from the 4 movements of Beethoven's 5th Symphony (not including the "bridge" the orchestra plays in the middle). Try to guess where they are and where they come from! What are Beethoven's secrets? He had many. His most prominent secret that he desperately tried to keep from the public and that caused him to be considered extremely eccentric, irritable, and hermit-like was his "weakness." He was deaf during most of his life. Imagine that...one of the greatest composers that ever lived could hardly hear. And yet, he wrote his life's greatest works after becoming deaf. He believed that art itself had "secrets" that had to be "forced into" in order to obtain art's highest level. There is no doubt Beethoven discovered many of the "secrets" of art -- people all over the world enjoy them every day. He was a true master of music, blessed by God. This piece and video are dedicated to him.

Adele - Hello / Lacrimosa (Mozart) – The Piano Guys
Story behind the song Hello/Lacrimosa (or "Chello," as it has affectionately been called in the studio) is a musical experiment bridging 18th-century spiritualism and 21st-century secularism. Imagine Mozart and Adele in the same room in an intense co-write session, quill and pen in hand, respectively. Picturing this hypothetical hangout helped to spark the creative combination of the two. Haven't heard "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem? It is a powerful piece of music. Listen here: As you can hear, both tunes' divergent traits presented challenges. One wallows in a wide, painstakingly minor 12/8 time and the other drives a poignant bi-polar major/minor common time. One draws its power from the fullness of a grand chorus and orchestra, the other from the isolation of a lone voice and piano. One conforms to age-old counterpart canon and musical theory, while the other is conveyed via verse/chorus pop song parlance. However, they share the same fundamental feeling -- "Lacrimosa" (meaning "weeping" or "tearful") mournfully bemoans spiritual death, while "Hello" gripes about relationship regrets. Different centuries. Different realms. Same emotion. Perhaps we aren't as far from our predecessors as we think we are. You'll hear towards the end of the tune an attempt by both motifs to meet in the middle as the two textured melodies intertwine. In their respective stories both plead for reconciliation. Neither seemed to find it apart, but together they sing of a second chance. The sounds you hear were created by 100 tracks of acoustic and electric cello, an instrument that has been emoting for centuries – an apt candidate for the task of tying together "Hellocrimosa" (our alternate affectionate title). This video was filmed at one of our favorite locations: Tuacahn Amphitheatre, utilizing different patterns and settings of giant mirrors, diffused light, and some very cold fog. How is the camera not reflected in th

Let It Go (Disney's "Frozen") Vivaldi's Winter - The Piano Guys
All the sounds you hear were created by 90 tracks of cello, piano, and vocals (with a little wind and suspended cymbal) This is NOT green screen. Everything you see is real snow and ice. Story behind the song: So who doesn't love a story about an estranged ice princess, a dynamic mountain man/reindeer duo and a snowman obsessed with warm weather? We all loved the movie "Frozen" and its single, "Let It Go." So much emotion, energy and drama packed into one tune. But we thought we'd add a little more drama...by melting together "Let It Go" and themes from Vivaldi's classical piece, "Winter." (You can watch an impressive performance of the original here: - see if you can find where we used the main themes from each of the three movements.) Vivaldi's almost reckless string motives helped us surround the determined, upbeat melody and chords from "Let It Go" with intensity and uncertainty. We wanted the music to alternate between "freezing" and "thawing," representing the opposing forces throughout the "Frozen" story.

Bring Him Home (from Les Misérables) - The Piano Guys
Story behind the dedication: We had an inspiring experience recently when we were asked by a woman whose husband was serving in the military if she could surprise her 5 very young children on stage at one of our concerts. Her husband had come home much earlier than expected and just in time for Christmas. It was an incredibly touching reunion. The audience stood and applauded for several minutes, stopping intermittently only to wipe their eyes. It is a memory we will never forget. This moment had a powerful effect on us -- it helped us to realize how much military families sacrifice to preserve the freedom we take for granted each day. We dedicate this song to these heroic families. Bring Him Home Original music by Claude-Michel Sch?nberg Arrangement produced by Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson & Al van der Beek Arrangement written by Jon Schmidt & Steven Sharp Nelson Piano recorded by Chuck Myers & Jake Bowen at Big Idea Studio Cello recorded by Al van der Beek at TPG Studios Piano: Jon Schmidt Cellos: Steven Sharp Nelson Mixed & mastered by Al van der Beek at TPG Studios Words to Bring Him Home God on high Hear my prayer In my need You have always been there He is young He's afraid Let him rest Heaven blessed. Bring him home Bring him home Bring him home. He's like the son I might have known If God had granted me a son. The summers die One by one How soon they fly On and on And I am old And will be gone. Bring him peace Bring him joy He is young He is only a boy You can take You can give Let him be Let him live If I die, let me die Let him live Bring him home Bring him home Bring him home.

Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma ᴴᴰ
We don't own this video. Pavarotti became even better known throughout the world in 1990 when his rendition of Giacomo Puccini's aria, "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot was taken as the theme song of BBC's TV coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The aria achieved pop status and remained his trademark song. This was followed by the hugely successful Three Tenors concert, held on the eve of the World Cup final at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome with fellow tenors Pl?cido Domingo and Jos? Carreras and conductor Zubin Mehta, which became the biggest selling classical record of all time.

Max Richter In Concert: Reimagining Vivaldi
Can't take another moment of Vivaldi's ubiquitous Four Seasons? Neither could Max Richter, a London-based composer who deftly blurs the lines between the classical and electronic worlds. Long ago he loved it the piece but like some of us, he grew tired of the overplayed warhorse, which can be found in no fewer than 250 recordings on sites like ArchivMusic. So instead of writing off the piece forever, Richter rewrote it. He discarded about three quarters of Vivaldi's original, substituted his own music and tucked in some light electronics for a total Four Seasons makeover. It sounds a little hipper — lighter on its feet in places, darker and more cinematic in others. Still, Richter's remodeled version retains the basic shape, and much of the spirit, of the master's original four violin concertos — each about ten minutes and in three movements, sequenced fast-slow-fast. Richter recorded his rejiggered Seasons with violin soloist Daniel Hope and together they brought the project to (Le) Poisson Rouge, the Greenwich Village music space, where we had our cameras set up and ready to roll. In Richter's reimagining, you'll recognize more than a few weather-related signposts like the violin's shivering figures in "Winter" and bolts of thunder in stormy "Summer." Yet in other places the music is heavily disguised. The cheerful birdsong that opens Vivaldi's "Spring" emerges as mere shards of the original, backed by moody pedal points in the electronic low end, lending it a movie music feel. And Vivaldi's violin horn calls in the finale of "Autumn" morph into a comforting minimalist blanket of warm double basses and electronics. The revamped Vivaldi is about as "classical" as Richter gets. For a taste of his more electronic side, the second half of this concert features selections from Infra, dance music he wrote for London's Royal Ballet, based on T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. For this music, Richter pares down to just a piano, his laptop and a string quartet, but h

Schubert: Symphony, No.8 - 'Unvollendete' - Radio Philharmonic Orchestra - Live Classical Music
The Radio Filharmonisch Orchestra conducted by Markus Stenz performed Schubert's 'Uncompleted' symphony no. 8 on May 31st 2013 in Vredenburg, Utrecht. The reason why the symphony was 'incomplete' is the subject of many studies. There is a theory that says Schubert didn't see the need for 3rd and 4th part, because he had put everything he needed in those first two parts. This would mean that Schubert broke with the usual structure of the 3 or 4 part symphonic tradition, something that could be seen as a bridge between the classical times and the Romantic era. This theory is much disputed though. Later Schuberts own sketches of the scherzo (the trio had to be completed) were added and a piece from the opera 'Rosamunde' was worked in as a finale. Re-upload from Radio 4's YouTube channel.
